Evaluation AT Celerico

Resume of internal evaluation of the action training

projecto jovem Celerico 2002

Participants: Ashia, Sylvia, Anita, Sylvia, Eric

Why this project?

· A person describing a local situation in Portugal without activities for children or any structure for young people.

· A strategy for E.N.O.A to test an action training after Bosnia and to do a second step to be inside a local project but in a different field and context.

· A will of the municipality to sustain this kind of initiative or at least a situation described like that.

Main aims

· Initiate action in order to develop long term projects.

· To involve the local community in the project and to create a relation of proximity.

· To use and adapt animation tools of intervention for youth workers.

The context

Two years before this place was described as a small village in the mountain, in a rural area without any motivation of young people to take part in local life

What they discover sometimes before the action?

The local needs weren’t the same, there were associations, social and youth workers, activities for children, educators and it wasn’t a village but a town and so on…

There was a gap between the prevision and reality…it was a different starting point

At a local level there were 20 participants who work on intercultural dimension, who participate to activities in 5 groups

At an international level, there were also 20 participants motivated to be involved in a project with help, coordination and evaluation thanks to the international referents (Sylvia, Anita…). For most of them it was a discover of action training and they liked to share their own experiences.

Local impact

Initiation, preparation and demonstration of street animation with the young who wanted to do something and with the local youth leaders

The young people participated actively to activities and they wrote a document of synthesis of their intentions. During a meeting with the city hall the gave it to the municipality with concrete proposals.

The young were proud of their work and more self-confident, stimulated by their experience and they had understood their possibility to exchange with the city hall about their life and their feelings.

They changed their mind on this crazy group of people coming there and speaking different languages.

After the action

There is not a real follow up but some contacts between participants.

Local associations, educators and youth workers over there didn’t change really their practice and didn’t continue this way of work because only one of them participate to this project.

What to keep? What to change?

To keep
Local financial support of the municipality
To keep on working even if it needs two years to succeed

To change

Standard application form for this kind of action with more explanations

on the meanings of an action training for the international participants to avoid that some of them choose it in a wrong way; for this we could put all the information on our website.

List of contacts and guidelines to prepare the project

To build the team before the project

To make sure that there will be local participants

Local association should be involved more and earlier

Selection of the participants made by all the team and not only one person

More time for collecting participants (2 or 3 months rather than only 2 weeks)

During To keep

Good food and good lodging out

The logical process of the program of the action-training

The daily programme (training, preparation, action, evaluation)

To change

To do the action at the beginning of school in September or at the end in July

A wareness of the responsibility of participant (the role of international participant)

No opened party with drunk people thanks to the action of some local participants to insure the safe of all the participants

Good working conditions with equiped and no dirty rooms (good light, free wall, possibility to project films on the wall…)

Guideline for the evaluation

The follow up To keep

Contacts between participants or team and local people

The fact that the international participants want to do the same kind of action in their own town

To change

Local level is responsible of the follow up and a member of the local participants working with kids should be chosen before to be in charge of the contacts and to know exactly what happen after.

Guide line for the follow up

For a long term impact to choose projects with a real description of the situation even if the team adapt themselves to the new context.
